Extreme precipitation events in the Mediterranean area: contrasting two different models for moisture source identification

چکیده

Abstract. Concern about heavy precipitation events has increasingly grown in the last years southern Europe, especially Mediterranean region. These occasional episodes can result more than 200 mm of rainfall less 24 h, producing flash floods with very high social and economic losses. To better understand these phenomena, a correct identification origin moisture must be found. However, contribution different sources is difficult to estimate from observational data; thus numerical models are usually employed this end. Here, we present comparison between two methodologies for quantification flooding that occurred during October November 1982 western area. A previous study, using online Eulerian Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) Model water vapor tracer (WRF-WVT) model, determined contributions evaporated over four sources: (1) Mediterranean, (2) central (3) North Atlantic Ocean (4) tropical subtropical Africa. In work use offline Lagrangian FLEXPART-WRF model quantify role played by same sources. Considering results provided WRF-WVT as “ground truth”, validated performance FLEXPART-WRF. Results show method an acceptable skill identifying local (western Mediterranean) medium-distance (central Atlantic) remote sources, like areas, underestimated it. Notably, event, area reported relative 6 times lower WRF-WVT. contrast, overestimates some over- underestimates should taken into account other authors when drawing conclusions widely used analysis.

Contrasting the termination of moderate and extreme El Niño events in coupled general circulation models

As in the observed record, the termination of El Niño in the coupled IPCC-AR4 climate models involves meridional processes tied to the seasonal cycle. These meridional processes both precondition the termination of El Niño events in general and lead to a peculiar termination of extreme El Niño events (such as those of 1982–83 and 1997–98), in which the eastern equatorial Pacific warm sea surfac...

Moisture source of precipitation in Western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica

Moisture sources for snow falling in Dronning Maud Land (DML), Antarctica, are calculated for 1998 using three dimensional 5-days backward air parcel trajectories. Impacts of climate change on extreme precipitation events in arid (Bandar Abbas) and semi-arid (Shahrekord) stations in Iran

The aim of this paper is to project extreme precipitation events in an arid and a semiarid station. In order to project climate change based on general circulation models (GCMs), we have applied LARS-WG[1] downscaling tool. This stochastic weather generator down-scaled the climate of two synoptic stations using HADCM3 model and A2 emission scenario for 2040. We extracted extreme precipitation e...

Daily atmospheric circulation events and extreme precipitation risk in Northeast Spain: the role of the North Atlantic Oscillation, Western Mediterranean Oscillation, and Mediterranean Oscillation

We employed a novel method that combined probabilistic analysis and spatial modeling assisted by GIS to analyze the risk of extreme precipitation in Northeast Spain related to three atmospheric circulation configurations: the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Mediterranean Oscillation, and Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO). The analysis was performed at an event-based scale using data ob...

Drought onset mechanisms revealed by satellitesolar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence: Insightsfrom two contrasting extreme events

This study uses the droughts of 2011 in Texas and 2012 over the central Great Plains as case studies to explore the potential of satellite-observed solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) for monitoring drought dynamics. We find that the spatial patterns of negative SIF anomalies from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME-2) closely resembled drought intensity maps from the U.S. D...
